Viking Engines

I am not yet a Viking owner and am still in the research mode. A 1973 Viking has a continental IO-520 and a 1974 has a Lyc IO-540. Is there a preference? Should I expect to pay more for a plane equiped with one or the other? This topic has probably been picked to death and lots of info must reside someplace.

Thanks, Mark, a Stinson owner

The advantages to the continental seem to be that people consider it to be "smoother and the cam is under the crank which helps prevent cam corrosion if it sits for long periods of time.

Other than that, I would be lycoming all the way. Widely supported and flown, known for making their TBO, powerful and take to LOP well.

I don't think you are looking at paying a higher price for 1 or the other, but might pay a bit more for the later model years.

Are you going turbo or non turbo?

Both airplanes fly the same, starting each is a little different.

I chose a Continental-powered Viking because the rebuild cost on a Lycoming is about $8,000 - $10,000 more than the Continental.
