Quick release rear stick?

Has anyone purchased and installed one of these?

I've got a 77 Decathlon and it'd be nice to remove it when carrying stuff and the kids.

Jon,

I puchased one for my 2005 8KCAB. It's easier to remove than to replace due to the "push to talk" switch on my rear stick. I also purchased the quick removal pins for the rear seat. I can remove/replace the door and get alot of stuff back there. No regrets.

Stan,

I've also got a PTT on the rear stick. How does the quick release stick and PTT work? I've never actually seen one, but I'd like to get one. I presume you got yours from ACA? Care to share the price?

I hadn't thought about the pins for the rear seat. That's a great idea. I was just going to remove my cushions, the rear stick and lay the seat flat. I like the idea of just removing the seat. Do you know how much that seat and cushions weigh? That would give me a little more breathing room on the w&b.

I like it.

I purchased both kits from ACA and cannot find the paperwork to relay the cost. I also purchased a plastic cover for the hole in the floor.

The PTT switch is located at the top of the stick. It's basically a two wire spade terminal switch. To remove I unscrew the nut (securing the switch) on top of the stick and the whole thing slides down the inside of the tube as you pull the stick out. The trick is to get the switch back up to the top of the stick when you re-install. I roll the foam rubber grip back and slide the black rubber top off of the stick. Then you fish the wire and switch up through the stick, re-install the nut, slide the black rubber top onto the stick and roll up the foam rubber grip.

Your POH should give the weight of seats and cushions or ACA can tell you. I'd say it's between 20 and 30 pounds.

I've had a bicycle and a weeks worth of camping/riding gear stuffed in the back of my plane--all secured with webbing and straps.

One last thing, you mention "stuff and the kids" in your post. I think the FAA, and others, would take a dim view of you hauling "the kids" unsecured in the back of your plane. I think you can purchase an extra wide seat if you are interested in hauling 2 small passengers.

Heres a thought why not cut the PTT wires a little ways from the bottom of the stick install a couple of spade connectors there, that way you wouldn't have to remove the switch? Thats what I did on my Champ stick, I went to Radio Shack and got a 2 pin plastic connector but the principle is the same.

Stan,

Thanks for the info.

My original post was poorly written. When I said kids, I only meant one at a time, which would still require the control stick to be removed.

Mnflyer,

Nice idea. I searched Radio Shack for that and couldn't find it. I've got one close to home, so I'll go over there and see what I can find.

All right, I looked on ACA site and seen none of these. I need to know how it works, how much it costs and is it worth it. I often take my rear stick out to take my three year old little girl for a ride.

Thanks.

I'm sorry, I just figured (because you have one) that you would know something about it and would give me some input on it.

I see. The quick release stick kit is simply a pin with clip that replaces the nut and bolt fastening the stick to the control yoke in the belly of the plane. All it does is eliminate the need for tools although it does make the process somewhat quicker. I don't remember the cost but it seemed reasonable. I only remove the stick in conjunction with rear seat removal when I need to haul more cargo than will fit behind the rear seat. I also purchased, from ACA, a plastic cover for the hole in the floor.

The parts people at ACA are very helpful and I only meant to be helpful in directing you to call them as they have all the information you need re: parts availability, compatibility and cost.

Thank You! I don't have a PTT in the rear stick so this will be easy. Like I said, I don't trust my three year old near the stick and take it out for that reason.

I have PTT in the rear stick with a plug to disconnect when removing the stick. My problem is when reinstalling the stick I have a hard time inserting the bolt or pin without damaging the wires or plug. What am I missing?
