Pre-Buy Checklist

I am looking to purchase a Ballanca Super Viking and would like to compile a list of known items to look for during the pre-buy inspection. I will have an A&P with me but would like to know what he is looking for. The following is a list of known items:

Horizontal tail attach point - Cracks in down tube

Aileron bracket movement where attached to read spar

Rear spar cracks at flap attach points

Visually inspect for fluid stains in wing structure from every access point. If stains are observed, further investigate with an inspection wire for rot damage.

Visually inspect for compression cracks on spar and ribs from every access point. Compression failures are usually noted by dark colored lines crossing the wood grain.

Visually inspect spar butt for cracks toward attach bolts.

Find out if the plane has been hangared all its life. If it was tied out walk away and don't look back! Lynn N9818B :o

I am currently in the process of purchasing a Viking. It has been stored outdoors in the past, what should I look for. Regarding proper storage, does it have to be stored in a heated hanger? Humidity controlled?

AOPA's article on Vikings recommended that any pre-buy inspection be done by someone familiar with Vikings noting center section particulars. Tradeaplane carried a Viking in the Madison WI area. I'm from Michigan and wonder if your organization has a list of AP mechanics that could do such an inspection in Wisconsin?

You are in luck, however, because Chuck Swain is an old, experienced Bellanca man: Beaver Aviation at Dodge County Airport. 920-386-2636.

Good luck on your purchase,
