New Citabria owner in San Antonio

Any Citabria/Decathlon owners in San Antonio?

I recently purchased a '72 KCAB and I'm just looking for some others to hang around with--maybe I can learn a little more about the Citabria/Decathlon line.

It's also going to need a rebuild in the next few years so if anyone has any advice on that I would appreciate it.

Doug,

I've been rebuilding my 1968 7GCBC for a year and a half. I'm almost done with the structural work and getting ready to recover. My advice is to have lots of cash available.

Once you start taking the plane apart, you will find yourself rebuilding or replacing a lot more than you anticipated, because it seems easy to do it at the time and it's just a little more work....

Seriously though, the rebuild has been a lot of fun and has taught me a lot about the airplane. My advice is to fly it a lot now, because you'll only be dreaming about flying when you're ripping off the fabric.

Good Luck!

John,

Thanks for the reply.

That's one thing I'm trying to do right now is come up with a budget. Is there maybe a list of 'standard' items that I should definitely replace while it's apart?

Thanks,
Doug

While I'm not in San Antone, I love to come down there. I've got a 76' 7ECA and my dad has had 4 Citabrias and 1 Decathlon. I've also got a close friend who has restored 2 Citabrias, his 7GCAA and his brother's 7KCAB. Both of which are nicer than a new one, and that's nice! I also have extensive experience with recovering fabric aircraft.

I agreee, fly it as much as you can now because when it's down it will take more time/money than you anticipate. I would not take my own airplane apart unless I had access to another to fly while I am working on the other.

Between my friend and I we can be of great help and information to you if you need it. He's closer to Dallas and I'm closer to Waco.
Both of us have extensive libraries on these aircraft and our experience goes back to the 60's.

Where in S/A are you based?

Doug,

I have a friend who has a Champ that he is trying to sell. He will buy a Citabria, probably, when it's sold. I'll forward your address to him.

Also, I know a 7KCAB owner at Kestrel. Again, I'll forward your address.

It's still in Tulsa at the moment. Thanks for fowarding on my address. I appreciate it. Like I said, I'm fairly new to this line of aircraft. I've read through most of the posts on this site. There is a lot of good info floating around.

Thanks,
Doug

Interesting, I'm from TUL an am going there this week. When do you plan to bring the plane to SAT and where will you keep it.

If you need anything just email me.

Doug,
Do you still own the 7KCAB near San Antonio?
I'm rebuilding a '68 KCAB serial number 79 and would love to ask some questions.
Plane is at Bulverde Airpark.
I have restored several planes and a couple Aeroncas, but the KCAB has some quirks that I don't understand.

Please let me know...

Best Regards,
