Need tool for removing thrust bearing?

I need to get at the crank seal which has the thrust bearing in front of it. There appears to be needed a special tool to get this off in order to change the crank seal which sits just behind it. Is there anyone out there with this tool or an idea on how to get the bearing off?

What engine are we talking about? In all the engines I have worked on the seal is in the outside of the case. There might be a bolted one two piece seal retainer but the thrust bearing is inside the case and the case has to be split to change it.

I have the O-435.... As I take off the diaphram, behind it are six more screws, once they are off I can look down the crank and see what looks like a solid "washer" with four teeth on it and this sits just in front of a bearing which is just in front of the crank gasket which is where I think my leak is. I have replaced the diaphram twice and re-torqued it three times and it still is leaking so bad I can only fly for five minutes before I can no longer see. According to the engine diagrams it must be leaking just behind the diaphram where the crank seal is.... I just can't get at it to replace that seal.

I called my mechanic, Neil Pobanz and in the course of talking I finally figured out that you have a Splined crank. I says that they sometimes place a small o-ring to seal the rear prop cone.

Now since I really don't know much about this lashup he suggested two people to call. Dave Allen at Popular
Grove 1-800-397-9181 or Lou Gage at 775-826-7184 for better and more complete information and guiidance.

Got a hold of a friend that had that prop on a Navion. He said it took 10 years to find out how to sucessfully install the bladder. It must be installed DRY, no sealers. Tighten the screws by hand, then 3/4 to 7/8 of turn more. No more, no less.

If you wish you can contact him, Mel Sorton at 785-743-2936

I am pretty sure it's not from the bladder but coming from the crank seal. I ordered my second bladder this month so I'm going to try it one more time..... The prop plate has the same instructions on it regarding the proper torque so every one is on the same page as far as that goes..... we'll see.

I just put a new seal in mine. I got the "new "style from el reno in OK.( about $500.00) It comes with a few other parts, washer, seal housing etc. The tool a can be made or I found one at boulduc aviation in anoka MN. I would any engine rebuilder would have one. It takes a LOT of torque to install it.As I remember about 450-500 foot lbs. of torque. Is you still have the old( felt )style I was told there are no new ones to be had. Let me know how you do? I can fond you phone numbers if you need. Mark
