I just don't get it!

Can somebody explain to me why we or more accurately, our planes are the great unknown in aviation? I doubt that there 300 flying triple tails flying. That is enough to be noticed, and yet still a rarity, yet how much recognition do we get at any flyin? How many were at OSH recently? Do you ever see anything in Sport Aviation or AOPA Pilot or Flying about our plane? Not only do we fly the best handling plane ever made (IMHO), but it was built by one of the greats of aviation history. I just don’t get it!

It has to be the stigma against anything with wood wings, that keeps folks away. Most pilots with a little gray hair can appreciate what the Bellancas are, but if I get any of the less than 40 crowd ask me about the wing construction, most reply "Oh!" when I tell them it's wood.

I'm recovering my wings in the local EAA shop and although most people around here know about wood wings, they have brought some student pilots in to see the wings. I put epoxy varnish on the wings to help protect them and then the fabric will go over the epoxy so right now the wood looks beautiful. So far I've heard nothing but positive comments and they usually want to know how much they weigh. :)

I think that it's both the wing and the Franklin engine. They seem to be complete unknowns to the average pilot. It's a little surprising that there is so little known about them..but maybe we are to blame...I have taught three people to fly from zero hours in Mooneys..and I have never offered any of them a ride...I just wouldn't want to break their heart
