Can a Franklin 6V-335 (I think it's a 6V) chopper engine be converted for use on a fixed wing aircraft?
I've heard they have higher compression than an A/C engine for one thing. Anything else?
What about the FAA :?:
 
The 6V engine has a different crank case and crankshaft than the aircraft engine. There is no legal way to install this engine in a certified aircraft that I am aware of. There is no front main bearing on the heli engine to support the prop. Greg
 
This was on eBay. I won it for $300.00 plus shipping. Basically all you get is a crank, camshaft, case, pistons, rods, and the data plate.
I just couldn't afford to miss this opportunity if it DID work out- not for $300.
It seems I've been wasting money lately. I got my seats back from the upholstery place. They're all wrong. I bought vinyl from Airtex and wish I'd bought different colors because they don't match the headliner (anyone need bright white and red?).
I guess I'll stick the vinyl on eBay and just suck it up on the seats and engine- like I can afford it. Now I know why aircraft owners are the poorest people on earth :wink:
 
You have not really been wasting money. If the pistons are any good they are worth $300.00 easy. Plus you still have heavy rods that are good in a 165. Don't be feeling bad about the deal. And if the crank shaft is still standard it is worth some money to! Greg
 
Dave i bought real leather on ebay for much less than vinal.Sometimes one can get a great deal out there!
 
however, I'm kind of stuck with what I have- red and white seats, white side panels w/red trim, and a biscuit-colored wool headliner.

Looks like the upholstery guy is going to make good on the seat screwup. Only problem is, he used up ALL my Airtex vinyl, so I had to give him even more to fix the rear seat up.

Maybe you can tell me- are the side panels backed by anything? Looks like the lower kick panel by the rear seat has a piece of thin masonite covered with vinyl, but the upper piece- the BIG piece that goes around the back windows, is on its own!
 
Your right the upper and center sidewalls are on there own.(stapled to wood strips that are connected to the tubing)The lower cab be bonded to a thin (.020)piece of aluminum. Good luck Mark
 
I guess the rear seat passenger(s) will have to be a little careful :o

So far, this is going quite well. Makes me nervous...
 
Dave you did not waste you money, I'll give you $200.00 for the engine driven fuel pump alone, Call me 612 385 1863 MARK
 
I didn't get the chopper engine after all. C R Ford (Texas) let me out of my obligation because I thought the engine included the pistons. It didn't. I was going to pay for it anyway (a deal is a deal). He's the one that suggested calling it off. One swell guy! :D
