Great news out of Oshkosh!
The Experimental parts in the name of safety is rolling! First the dynon and now the Garmin G5 both approved for certified aircraft.
The Garmin stc covers 562 airplane models and comes out later this week.
A replacement artifical horizon, with airspeed, altitude, vertical speed, a turn bank slip ball, GPS track, groundspeed, and a host of other goodies, with a 4 hour back up battery all for 2k? That's a bargain!
Also, it installs In less than an hour! No panel cutting etc. They have a video of a tech installing one in a Grumman in about 30 minutes.
This is exciting news for anyone running a vacuum AI and not keen on the venturis powering it!
I may well be first in line for some "mini-glass"

Sadly, the STC covers the Vikings built under 1A3, but none of the pre-Vikimg birds. My turn and bank is starting to sound funky and I'd love to do the swap, but doesn't look possible yet. That being said, I'll probably call Garmin about adding the 14-19-3. Don't have my hopes up :).

I've had the same problem with some Electronic International instruments. I just called EI up and asked them to send me a letter stating that the instrument was going to be added the next time the AML was modified. That worked. I also called another manufacturer who had an STC to install gap seals on C D E AND G35 Bonanzas. I was doing it for an F35. They sent me a letter saying it was inadvertently left off the AML for the F 35. That work too. So if our planes aren't on the AML, I would ask Garman for such a letter. I would hope that would work. Short of that, I would just show that we have very little different from some of the approved planes (and try and work with a reasonable Fed.)

You don't necessarily need to go to "your" fsdo. As soon as you find where a field approval has been granted for the item you wish to install, contact that fsdo rep. Don't just contact the office, but the actual person who will sign Block 3 of the 337. There is a name for doing this...hmmm seems to escape me for the moment. Anyway, gotta go now, time to go shopping.
