Franklin Cylinder spark plug thread repair

The Franklin 150 in my 14-13-2 had a helicoil installed in the spark plug threads in one of the cylinders. During run-up the plug blew out. Although I've heard of helicoils being used successfully, evidently this one wasn't installed correctly or perhaps the minor dia. on the thread wasn't small enough to engage the helicoil.

In any case, I now need to find a shop that can repair this cylinder. Does anyone have any recomendations for a good Franklin repair shop (ideally West coast). Any suggestions/input would be greatly appreciated.

Try Greg Lucas in Paul's Valley, or Eddie Stewart in Elmore City, OK. They (Either?) have the tools and parts needed to quickly re-build Franklin cylinders specifically, especially the 150/165 horse Franklins. Greg is a member of the club, and a really good guy, try him!

hey doug!

another west coast possibility is:

Debs Aircraft
Jerry Debs
1348 Brookside Blvd.
Grants Pass, Oregon 97526
(541) 474-2732

although he has a reputation for being "slow" (you have to stand over his shoulder to get him to do the work) he does fine work and stands behind his product.

actually, any competent cylinder shop can do the heli-coil job provided they have the necessary manuals. if you're flying behind a franklin-stein, you should have those manuals, too. they're available from univair at a reasonable cost.

hope this helps!

Thanks to both for the quick response! Do you happen to have contact info for Greg Lucas? Is Paul's Valley in OK also?

Doug,
I am not sure what number you have but you can contact me an 405-268-3925 about any time. If you send the cylinder it will probably go out the same day unless I get it late. Thanks Greg

Don't despair.. Virturally ALL cylinders have helicoils installed for the spark plugs. This is normal!!
