Exhaust Valves

Exhaust valves for the 150 Franklin are rare. I have low compression in one cylinder and will be replacing the valve. What is the correct logbook entry for installing a new, after market valve?

thanks

If it's a PMA'd part number with an 8130, I suggest the following:

Date: ***** Tach (or Hobbs): ****** ACTTSN: ******* Engine TTSN: ****** Engine TSMOH: ******* Engine TSTOH (if applicable): ********

Removed # *** cylinder IAW Franklin Engine Service Manual Section XVI - "Cylinder Assembly" - due to low compression. Inspected cylinder components IAW Sections XVI and VI "Table of Limits and Tolerances". Found exhaust valve worn outside of service limits. Installed new exhaust valve, Part # ******* IAW Section XVI. Installed # *** cylinder IAW Section XXVI "Engine Assembly" using new cylinder base gasket, Part # ******. Ground ran engine and inspected for leaks, no defects noted. Conducted flight test, no defects noted. Conducted post flight compression test of # **** cylinder and compression is **/80. See Appendix section of this Engine Log for appropriate Forms 8130.

Printed Name
A&P Number

Insert the appropriate data everywhere I put *****'s.

If it's an exhaust valve without a part number, an 8130, or from an unknown source, just install it and make sure it works.

If there is an aftermarket exhaust valve that has been approved, please let us all know. Several years ago we tried to get the valves from India approved and sent 2 of them with 2 original Franklin (Eaton) valves to a testing firm in Southern California that the FAA uses for testing. After the full destructive testing, the Indian valves came out better in all respects, but the FAA kept putting off a decision for approval. After almost 2 years our IA finally said we were wasting our time and we gave up.The FAA is not our friend. ____Grant.

thank you Brad and Grant. So what choices does that leave us with? Can I take the old Chrysler valve, grind it to fit, and call it an owner made part? What is the valve from India? Since this subject is so sensitive, my e-mail address is markwdavis-at-live dot com

thanks

Mark,
There are many reasons to have low compression. Investigate before making any decisions on replacement
parts. Ask Susan Prall about parts you may need. The later #18084 exhaust valve is very good and I'd think twice before chucking it. If the guide is worn, I'd consider making another with the ID. to match your valve,
now ground true a few thousandths undersize. Check with your IA first.
