Cross Country in a Cruisair

Hello all!
I am going to be flying my cruisair from Hillsville, VA, to San Francisco, CA, and then on to Bonners Ferry Idaho. I am planning on flying south to Dallas and then Phoenix.
Any suggestions for FBO's or things to see along the way?
Thanks!

You might consider your first stop in Tullahoma, TN. Very nice folks running the airport and the Beech Heritage Museum, which is on the field, is definitely worth seeing. As for the west coast you should consider a stop in Santa Paula - in case you need any maintenance help Dan Torrey is a great resource there. From Santa Paula you can fly along the coast to the SF Bay area. It's a long trip - allow yourself plenty of time. What airport is your destination in the SF area? When are you planning to make this trip?

Do you think you might be in CA during the West Coast Bellanca Fly In at Columbia (O22) June 10-12? If so, you HAVE to attend, best chance to see and talk to so many triple tails and their pilots!

Thanks for all of the advice!
My destination in SF is Hayward Executive.
I will hopefully be departing this saturday after an annual with Scott Thomas this week.
I will definitely make it a goal to stop at the beech museum.
I have plenty of weather days to burn and plan on staying a day or two in dallas and phoenix.

If you have the time, come up to Oregon and see all or some of the world class aviation museums. Go to :

Also, time permitting, go up to the Red Barn at Boeing Field in Seattle. Also a spectacular museum.
Creswell ( 12 SE of Eugene) is a good starting place, and about 3.5 hrs N of Hayward by Cruisair. Let me know if you can come up this way. Hangar space may be an issue, but if you let me know in advance, I can see what I can do.

The museum at Hood river is amazing. Huge, full of antique planes and cars, and almost all of the planes are in annual and flyable. It was the most interesting museum (other than the Smithsonian) that I have ever seen. ____Grant.

This time of the year...

Death Valley Furnace Creek Airport: Your one chance to land below sea level and they are having a mega bloom going right now. Very rare for Death Valley. In the restroom lobby there is a phone number you can call and they will take you to the Inn or the Ranch. Both have meals and a hotel. No fuel.

Head south 90 minutes to Chino. Planes of Fame has more flying (not just flyable) war-birds than any place in upper CA (AKA Oregon) but if it's a tie walk across the ramp to Yanks where you'll find more of the jet age stuff.

Where else but Chino would you ever see this?

And I don't think that will ever happen again ANYWHERE.

From Chino it's just 53 miles to Catalina. Catalina is a private airport and they do charge a $25 landing fee. Eat on the airport or head to town for lunch. Make sure and do a lap around the island on the way back to the mainland.

Mojave airport is an interesting place to land. Get a bite to eat at lunch time and good chance you'll see this guy in there.

The day I took this picture I thought they were going to take my camera. They were closing the doors because I was taking pictures from the correct side of the red line.

There are often more 747's at Mojave than most major airports in the world.

If you want to do an Alpine Lake Big Bear is just 37 miles from and 5,800' feet higher than Chino. Like most SW airports there is a restaurant on the field.

Sedona AZ is a must stop. Note the fence post in this picture, I'm on the run-up pad.

Good food here too.
