Cost of Parts

This was a private response to a Member regarding the high cost of seemingly simple parts:

Some parts prices get you to wonder why, but the beaurocracy has a lot to do with it due to ridiculous (and very expensive) requirements. As far as "old" stock is concerned, all industries have to price their products based on replacement costs. I know this doesn't ease the pain, but you already stated it in very elegant terms: If it were easy anyone could....

My personal observation is that although I pay several thousand dollars for an annual on my "simple" airplane, I would not want to be one of those people who never see the earth from the vista and clarity of altitude on his own terms, whilst driving down another congested Interstate.

Bob , I bought a handle from a Super Viking to assist getting on the wing walk and the thing cost 30 bucks! Simple u shaped assist handle. I then bought a 3 page Flt manual and that was 25 bucks! All from the new Bellanca. I do Pitot static and transponder certs/ vfr 8o bucks Ifr 120 you don't pass you don't pay so there are some good deals out there. but not in parts!

Prices do stink, but what can you do but search around. Case and point: When putting clevelands on my 14-13 I needed to install the axles off of a Viking (1 1/2 in instead of 1 1/4). Factory said sure....850 per axle....WOW. Wentworth wanted 350 per axle...Finally found a guy in texas who had a shot out Viking with bad wood....65 a piece and in great condition. If only radios, paint, and engine pieces were the same way. Oh well...I'm with Robert on this one. I enjoy the peace of a quite evening of flying around the peaks of the Big Horn Mtns here in Wyoming, and that alone is enough to make me pay whatever the cost. I'm glad you brought up static checks Lynn, I need to get mine done next month...thanks for the reminder.

Merriot, In 1998 I flew my Cherokee 140 from Pittsburgh to Seattle doing alot of Lewis and Clark. I made the Big Muddy in one day and then up to Mandan, ND and then down the Yellowstone to Butte and I-90 to Seattle all VFR. I then returned over Kalispel and thru Montana. I fell in love with Western Montana. I landed and spent the night in Malta. Montana (eastern Mont.). It was there that I was givin the airport car to use for the night, it was loaded with hundreds of dollars of lose change! NPR (nat public radio) had a segment on this car in 2001 ! What a great adventure. I sold my Cherokee that I owned for 20 yrs. and bought my Cruisemaster for my next Lewis and Clark adventure. Lynn Ford N9818B

Got a great quote on taxi springs for my 14-19-2 from Alexander Bellanca . Fifty eight bucks each and to have them custom made would be a hundred each. Finally a good deal on a part as promised from Alexander. LYNN N9818B
