Thanks Guys,
Sorry for not answering quicker but we have had a terrible few weeks in Melbourne. Fortunately we have not been directly under threat as we are on the west side of the city and the fires are North East. Saturday the 7th Feb was a truly terrible day with temps at 46 oC+ (120 of) and winds of 60mph. Our state of Victoria has been in drought for more than 10 years so everything was very dry! Once the bushfire started there was just no stopping it, at some stages it was moving at 60mph - faster than people could drive away, and many lost their lifes trying to flee in cars. The fire was so hot aluminium engines melted and run out on to the road. These fires have refined what a bushfire is in Australia we have never seen anything as bad before, more than 1800 homes lost and more than 400 people still missing and many towns wiped off the map. It has been described as the perfect storm - with fire. We have many friends who have lost family not to mention their homes. The fire moved so quickly people did not get any warning from the authorities, a friend told me he heard a sound like a jet engine and the fire appeared over the hill a mile away within 3 minutes his house was on fire, just incredible. One bright light shines out in a place called Kinglake, which was totally destroyed, the locals defended the Pub which is the only building left - just so they would have a cold beer, now that's Aussie spirit!! These fires are still burning and more towns are under threat today, they will burning till we get some rain - whenever that is. Hard to believe but Northern Australian is having record rain and floods!
regards
Bernie
