Battery Question

All,

I am wondering what you all may be using for batteries in your Citabria's. I have a 1973 7GCBC, and with it's factory rubber battery box set-up it seems I am limited to the Gill G-35 or G-35S (Sealed Recombinant Gas) Series. This is due to the thin metal retention strap that slides over the top of the battery on the guides molded into the Gill batteries.

The problem I am having is that I have had really bad luck with Gill batteries. The one I have now was put in last annual, so it is just one year old. It will no longer hold a charge. It is the basic G-35.

I would like to put in a Concorde RG-35XC, but it doesn't look like it will fit due to not accepting the factory retention system used by the Gill as mentioned above. I've heard from others that the concorde batteries tend to hold up better than Gill. Several IAs in my area recommend only Concorde.

Any thoughts or experiences anyone can share? Am I simply limited to the Gill batteries?

Thank you,
Don

Hi Don, I would suggest you call ACA and ask if they have an approved battery box for the Concorde batteries. In looking thur the TCDS it would appear that they do: under the electrical equipment section 304 (t or u) but ACA could tell you for sure.

I removed the old Gill from my 8KCAB many years ago. Removed the original battery "box". Been using a Concorde RG-25XC ever since. Just minor changes to the battery support as its a different size.

I replaced my Gil with a Concorde. Aviation Consumer tested both Gil and Corcorde and their results favor the Concorde.

I have a 75 GCBC and relocated my battery to the firewall. I have a dry cell Hawker battery, PMA'd Need to get a field approval for change. Works fine, less weight, and gets the weight out of rear. B
