Basic Med

Robert,
You cannot post to comment on your complaint about doctors refusing to deal with "basic med" Same thing about mechanics and CFIs.
After years of having to maintain a first class medical, I went Basic med last year. The biggest problem was convincing my primary care doctor that she could do it. I had to force feed her the statement that any state licensed doctor, physician or whatever could be qualified. I believe basic med should bring back many pilots from the sport pilot or inactive lists.

I think the hesitation on the physician's side will subside after the first few years and it normalizes.
I think Basic Med is great, but I think the "possible" LSA weight increase would have a much larger effect.

The biggest problem in aviation isn't old pilots becoming medically disqualified, it is young pilots being unable to afford accessing GA. We can eliminate all medical requirements, and it will only delay the decline a few more years. If we want to reverse it, we need to reduce ownership and maintenance costs to allow more to access GA.

I urge all who have gotten the BasicMed sign-off to share the doctor's contact info so others won't have to go through the search. Send it to me in an email and I wil post it on the Announcements section.

Got the Basic Med this year. My Dr. had no problem with it as he has taken care of me for many years. I used the info provided by AOPA to show it was just a wellness exam. If you can drive you can fly. Lynn the crate

Lynn, That's exactly what I did. I copied AOPA's info sheet and highlighted the physician's duties. There shouldn't be any differences for qualifying, no matter where you live in the USA.

I don't think that the question some MD's have re Basic Med is whether they can sign it off, it is whether they want to assume any ''liability'.

A Doc in my EAA chapter announced a few months ago that he was available for Basic Med sign-off. During the discussion he did say that he believed that other MD's he knew were reluctant to get involved because they are generally uncomfortable with anything that has to do with aircraft pilots. Afraid to be called onto the carpet for '. . . Piper Cub collides with 747 airliner, over 300 persons killed . . . pilot of Piper Cub holder of Basic Med certificate . . .'.

I have found that Doc's that already sign-off medical for commercial truck drivers don't flinch over a Basic Med sign-off.

My FAA Med examiner, who flies a Glasair he built - doesn't have any problems.
