ATTACK

JB, and other computer heros-- who and what is attacking our Forum? This started shortly before and during $&F. The last thing I want to look at when I open the Forum is hackers from India selling me crap I don't want and don't need. So how do we waterboard these bad boys. 50 cal. in each wing of the triple tail! Lynn the crate flies on. :P

It appears, Lynn, that the captcha (squiggly letters and numbers you have to enter to sign up) that defeats spam bots is being circumvented by legions of actual people sent to spam forums manually. A terrible economy worldwide can be quite the motivator and the bottom feeders are clearly desperate. Robert zaps these topics by day, and I usually patrol for them at night. Last few days, though, I haven't logged in...been logging lots and lots of landings instead - day and night - and making sure nothing went astray during the recent annual so that I don't terrify poor Robert when we go to the West Coast Bellanca Fly-In soon.

Strange thing is that I was most vigilant for awhile there and never found a one of the silly things. Thus I guess karma dictates that if I keep logging in there won't be any

One thing I'd advise everyone is don't respond - DO NOT RESPOND - to any of these spam topics. Yes, I know, I goofed up once myself on this. Thing is, whenever there is a response, the spammer gets notified and, thus, keeps us on their active list.

The only way to shut the suckers out is to make this forum read-only for the public and allow postings by members only. You'd have to enter your membership number to start topics and/or respond to them. That would truly suck, however, because it would turn away our curious fellow aviators who don't know our aircraft but are interested and have questions. To me that would be like chatting only with people based at your airfield and ignoring all visitors.

In short, folks are on combat spam patrols. Best and only solution I can see really. Looks like they need to be stepped up a bit.

I think at the present spam rate we are having an annoyance only. They are curious in that they don't quite make sense-sort of a list of weird sites but not quite a request for a response from us. I think the minor problem of having to skip through a little spam is outweighed by the benefit of having "strangers" with legitimate comments/questions about Bellancas be able to sign on with their interesting mailings. Let's keep it as it is for now and see what happens.

Actually, Peter, it's called link spamming, blog seeding, and other names that add up to Search Engine Optimization or SEO to use the industry term.

The point of it is not to get us to do anything but to create as many backlinks (links to their sites from other sites) as possible to raise their rankings in Google searches. A major factor in Google rankings is how many sites have links to yours. There are many other SEO tactics but I won't bore you with them all.

The only other really annoying one most of us encounter regularly is that long string of so-called key words we see every time we bookmark a site...you know, you see a site for, say, discount cat food, the name of the site is simple (catfood.com or the like), you bookmark it and get a LONG name (e.g. The lowest prices on premium cat food and feline dietary health supplements on the Internet!), most of which you have to backspace over so you can even recognize the damned site when you pull down your favorites menu. The attack of the keywords.

Jonathan - the Internet's best source for dilatory drivel remotely related to aviation and Bellanca Triple Tails available on the web

Thanks for the brief education. I was genuinely baffled as to why they would have that posting since there was no legitimate/obvious way to respond, but now I comprehend. (I was blind, but now I see)Peter

Early this morning I "came in" while we were under attack by a link spammer, and started deleting topic after topic, but I could see that the guy was still on the boards...moving then to the high wing guys. ENOUGH! I thought...gotta ban this guy or I'll be here all morning. So I look at the log, see this list of deleted topics, grab the IP address, and hit "Ban Permanently." Smug now that I'd gotten him, I click the link to return to the forums. Oops...I'd entered my own IP address...I'd permanently banned myself

My telephone conversation with Robert was...well...let's just say I was quieter than normal and my face had the florid flush of a day spent in the sunshine.

I finally did manage to squash the bug...the proper bug. Appropriate domain name...diarrhea.in (with diarrhea spelled wrong). For the heck of it I went to that Indian site and, yep, there was a hanging roll of toilet paper you click to enter the site. What a wide, wonderful world we live in.

JB, Robert, and Bill Gates the Forum is under ATTACK again :x :x Just what I need Triple Tail Viagra. Lynn the crate

Just killed a few pests, Lynn. I took Robert with me to Columbia and the two of us did not always find the best Internet service enroute. Greater vigilance will return.
