Air box for Cruisairs

Grant Jordan asked me to upload pictures of airbox/filters for Franklin 150 and 165. The pic of the box on the engine is for a 165, the round one is for a 150. Questions to Grant.
There are 7 other pictures, so if you want more, let me know and I will email them to you. Grant's computer is limited, so I am going to be the conduit.

To all: Almost everything you see in these photos is homemade. The only original part I see is the rectangular intake for the oil cooler - and that has been modified. Use common sense, previous approvals and your IA when fabricating or modifying. Dan

Your right. they are all home made or a modification of a stock Cruisair air intake system. None of them have been signed off.The one that is still on an engine is a modified Cherokee 180 filter. It required the oil cooler to be moved about 2 inches forward, but didnt put a bulge in the bottom cowl. When I put the 165 in my plane I will try to get it legal. The round one is from a 150, and is very similar to a drawing ,and 337 that I ran across when going through old FAA micro fitches. I thought that people might get an idea of what can be done, and show their IA the photos to see if they think the feds might buy it. I fly off of a dirt strip, and could really use an air filter. When I bought my plane it had an air filter that was so Mickey Mouse that my IA said get that thing off, or I wont annual the plane. I think all engines should have air and oil filters to get anywhere near TBO. Just my thoughts.____Grant.

I just dug through my pile of micro-fitches, and the air filter that was approved was on N74431. There is a fairly good drawing and reference to an stc# for that filter on a 7 series Bellanca.____Grant.

I believe 74431 is owned by Randy Thompson in the Rdd/Rbl area. I have a 337 for the non-filter setup with a Harrison oil cooler like the Franklin powered Maule. I operated off a dirt strip for years and oil analysis showed no contamination. Dan

Randy sold the plane a few monthes ago, and it is going to be in a new Air Museum being built in Nevada. That plane also had an aux fuel tank made from a modified BT13 oil tank. It was installed in the early 50s with a one line log book entry. If only things were that easy now.___Grant.

I have two 14-9s that had Franklins installed with a simple logbook entry. One of which was used in 135 operation. Another had a Warner installed without a 337,as well. Dan
