7GCBC Tailwheel & Towbar

My father has a 1974 7GCBC. How do you determine what tailwheel the plane has and appropriate towbar to use? I was hoping to find him one for Father's Day.

Go to aircraft-spruce.com then look at the tailwheel pictures, the most common Citabria tailwheel is the Scott 3200, then under pilot supplies click on towbars, the Bogert (Bogi Bar) 4-TDG works GREAT on the 3200.

Thanks Tom! I believe it is the Scott 3200. I do know the tailwheel is supported by a leaf spring or single flat bar assembly. I did a little more research and found that http://www.chiefaircraft.com has actual photographs. The Scott 3400 appears to be supported by a single round bar. I saw the towbar you recommended too. That looks like it should do the trick. When using it, do you have to be careful of the grease sert on the axle with that towbar? I found on http://www.oshkoshpilotshop.com what might be a similar towbar for "Scott 3000 series" tailwheels. It was about $20 cheaper than the other. Any info on that? Are they all about the same as far as construction and durability? One last question-can you push the plane with these tow bars?

The Bogert bar is much better because you're actually flexing the tubing to widen the ends and seat them over the axle, the cheaper bar simply uses a spring which will not keep it as firmly attached nor is it as easy to spread/attach. $20. is cheap insurance to assue it doesn't come loose at a critical time.

Sorry I missed two of your questions, the Zert fitting will not be damaged, you can push and pull the aircraft easily by yourself. To push it I place the pad of my right hand (the pad at the base of my thumb) on the tab that attaches the brace wire to the vertical fin, DO NOT push on the brace wire, DO NOT push on the rudder.

DO NOT push on either the rear struts or the jury struts either, only push on the forward lift struts 2-3' from the fuselage.

The rear struts are are for stiffening the wing and can be bent quite easily.

Tom, thank you again very much for all the great information! I was curious about the difference in the cheaper towbar. That completely explains it. Thank you also for the detailed information on pushing the plane. I haven't thought about all that. I'll have access to the plane in July and will try all that out! Can't wait to try the towbar out too. Thanks again for all the great feedback. This is a great place with a wealth of information.

I grew up with Cubs and Champs and we thought tailwheel towbars were for wimps, I only purchased one to avoid long-term damage to the fabric by pushing on the vertical fin and stabilizer,.................how wrong I was, the tow bar makes pushing and pulling FAR easier.

There is another towbar, with two wheels, that actually lifts the tailwheel, it is prefered by some..............................in my opinion nothing beats the strength and simplicity of the Bogert bar, I have a bag to stow it in for the very infrequent times I may want it while traveling-visits to the radio shop, etc.

Exactly!!!! It's nothing to push the plane, but when rolling it back in the hanger by yourself, the only real way to push it is to grab the handle (jacking handle?) at the rear of the fuselage and push on the horizontal stabilizer. As the plane has gotten older and I've gotten wiser to it's value, I've been wanting to avoid the wear on the fabric. I did see the one with wheels. I could see how it might be neat, but couldn't see the need for it if the others work fine. On concrete, once the plane gets rolling, it doesn't take much force to move it. It won't be long and dad will the proud owner of the Bogert bar. Again, I do appreciate all your help and good info. Sounds like you have put this one through it's paces and have sold me. Thanks again.

Just got my Bogiebar.
It's worth the extra twenty bucks.
Aircraft Spruce was fast to ship also.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Rich, thanks for the feed back. Got the one in I ordered too. They were very fast at shipping. I haven't had a chance to use, but can't wait to try it out. I think too the extra few bucks for the better towbar is worth it.

If you REALLY want to get him something nice, check out the Tail Dragger Dragger over at http://dragger.com/

I've owned one for two years. It's the best thing since sliced bread!

Craig, thanks for the feedback. I ended up going with the bogie bar. I saw the one you were talking about and it definitely looks like it works very well.
