6A-335 Franklin Conversion

Dave,
Your mags and generator will work but the starter will not be enough to work for long on the 180. The 180 starter is a little shorter than a 165 but much more torque. You will have to change to a new style fuel pump and five whole accessory case. The old fuel pump mount won't fit the 220 - 180. It also take special cast mounts to fit on you engine bed mount. The other consideration is going to the correct mag, generator gears to fit the five whole case. Also if the 180 had a four whole case the accessory gear on the engine will have to be changed. I know it sounds like a lot of trouble but it is not that bad. The only other thing is after you buy the STC you will find nothing on the drawings will work, every thing has to be re engineered. You better know what you are doing to make this engine conversion work right. You also have to add about one inch to the cowling to make it fit right. Greg

What do you know about the difficulty of doing the 180 lyc. install with a compact hartzell c/s prop. It is relatively painless in a cessna 170, but I have not read much on it with a bellanca. Any words of wisdom?

Merritt

I was under the impression the -335 Frank was a drop-in conversion without cowl mods. The -350 on the other hand is a whole 'nother matter...

With the trouble one has to go through with a -335, it sounds like the -350 conversion would be about the same amount of work if you don't include getting it certified (could make you "certifiable")

The external dimensions of the 180 and 220 hp engines are identical. The only real difference is compression and bore. The 180 is 4 1/2 inch bore 7-1 compression, the 220 is 4 5/8 bore and 10.5 -1 compression. Same crank, cam , lifters, engine mounts, case and accessories. The crank shaft sticks out an extra one inch, moving the cowling helps take in the prop governer and vacum pump in the front. The engine mount has to be stiffened up a bit also. Greg

Do you know of anyone that's done the -350 conversion besides one guy in Arizona?

I sure don't , but sure would like to make the mod to NC74392 one day...
