300 HP Lycoming Starter

My starter on my Bellanca (300 hp Lycoming) won't extend out to catch the flywheel. It spins but doesn't jump forward. I figured I'd take it off and take it to the A&P at Knoxville. I got it off, no problem then called the local A&P.They say they don't work on them, only swap it for a rebuilt. Anybody got any ideas on where I could ship mine to get work done on it?

Dear Rick:

Any engine overhaul shop should be able to overhaul it, but this might be a good time to go with the lightweight starter (149-NL) from Sky Tec. It's about 7 pounds lighter and better, faster cranking as well. No Bendix!

If and when you order, be sure to check the power cable length. Because the starter is smaller, it may not reach and may need an extension.

Regards,

I'm not really a Viking guy, however, I think the use of this forum is pathetic in light of the relative few numbers of aircraft, narrow interest level and normally ethusiastic ownership. Dan

Some of the Viking guys feel they need there own newsletter. They feel there are to special for this site. I am lucky I own both types. I found with the Viking I have the books and just about all info I need comes from them.

On the subject of the starter I changed out my Ly coming starter on my 14-13-2 with a sky-tec and wish I had done that many years ago. When my starter goes bad in my Conny I will go with a lite weight. They turn over fast enough to taxi.

That's not really fair. The Super Viking group had a list going 7 years before this one opened. Most of us are over there.

Frank............The Vikings are different in many ways from their earlier brothers/sisters. However, the differences pale when compared to the commonalities with the 1937 CruisairJr and all that followed........up to the 1967 14-19-3A. Face it............If you own a "Viking'" you own an orphan.......It's a great airplane.......I've flown a few. Join the ranks of owners of Navions, Seabees and Johnson Rockets. Now that Avia Bellanca is for sale........again, prepare to unite with all model 17 owners to keep the type in the air! Dan

This post is off topic. The topic was regarding a starter.

The comment about the use of the forum as being pathetic was at best simply ugly or condescending to a group of passionate airplane lovers who simply get up every morning and put their pants on like everyone else and fly a plane that they enjoy and probably do a lot to keep it flying. It is appropriate to provide advise and even a personal opinion or perspective on the merits of different manufacturers, models, and airframes, but it rubs me uncomfortably to see disrespect in a forum intended to share valid information and to provide much needed support. "Pathetic" felt like a hit below the belt.

Jeff, my point is, that for the relative large number of model 17s out there , Not much input is......there. If you think I'm "condescending and below the belt," so be it. It's not the first time. I've been accused of far worse. All I want is to maintain a line of communication and brotherhood. Dan

Maybe you didn't understand, there is another list that's used by the Viking group. This year it's averaging about 425 messages a month. If someone needs access to that list please drop me a note via my website.
