Why Pvt. Planes are Dying

When I bought the Crate in 2002 my friends bought a 1948 Navion A great plane but with a lousy engine/prop. E225 and Hartzell bladder controled. The Harzell has the infamous 5 yr AD. It made it the 1st time but not now! Our friends at Hartzell said 20k and another 2500 to overhaul the 20k prop and we are back to five yr AD OR 25K for a newer model and your problem is solved! Wonderful folks those Hartzell boys. The Crate has the McCauley thankyou LORD. We are now looking for a used O470 to install in the Navion. To find a combo like the crate would be super but all the -2 boys would jump on a McCauley prop for their bird. I guess our best bet is a early C182 with a CS McCauley. We would have to have the acc, case made for fuel pump and Hyd pump. I said I would post on the forum to see if anyone can help our dying Navion. Navion has STC for Cont. O470,520,550 engines but it would be best to stick with carb and not have fuel injection ie. alt air and all the rest. So a heads up to Cruisemaster Hartzell owners like life your days are numbered. Lynn the Crate

Lynn, If it is blades your friend needs for the Navion, I can get you in touch with a man who has some spares. If your friend needs a hub he is probably S.O.L. Call me(707 928 5538)._____Grant.

Lynn.
its been 5 years or so since I went through this, but I found a prop shop in Puyallup Washington that does a lot of Alaska birds and will work with you more than most shops will. I had the hartzell problems, as inspected by another shop, ( that I will never use and they are in my home town) and they just wanted to sell me all new. I found Northwest propeller in WA and he inspected the same prop with slightly different results but when I asked he said he could find all the parts I needed in his boneyard. I was flying soon. I later damaged that hatzell, thank god for that, and now fly a McCauley and the same shop set me up with a 182 prop. A C-66 I think. He told me that I would never run out of parts for the McCauley because our blades are inches shorter than the shortest blade accepted on the 182. They sent me a rebuilt one for about $3500 if I remember corectly. That was about 5 years ago. Never a problem and love it. Brian

Here is an interesting option on Barnstormers. IO470-C. 250HP so don't need beef up and already approved und TCDS. I tried to find one of these when I needed upgrade and could not find any.

My Hartzel just past the 5 yr test. Prop shop said I was a lucky one. Heard that N9833B has a new McCaully prop. The plane was recently sold. I asked the previous owner for a copy of the paperwork. Never did get a response. I talked to McCauly, they said 5 years ago it would be no problem sticking that Cessna 182 prop on a Bellanca. They say now it's an FAA no no.

If that is the case then you should be able to find the field approval 337 and data from one of thoses aircraft and use that and AC 23-27 as your approved data for your own approval.

Glenn, I can send you the paper work for the Mc Cauley/ Mine was installed at Weber when the last guy crashed her. Lynn :P

Thanks Lynn - is your prop the 2A36C18 listed on the type certificate or the new version McCaully currently builds. The new version is what would interest me.

Thx -Glenn

Glenn, it's a 2A34C66 that is on the crate. STC SA203GL 12/08/1977 Weber Aero. What is the new version? Lynn :P

Brian, Do you remember what city Northwest Propeller was in? I did a web search and came up with one in Payallup and one in La Conner. I have a Hartzell hub that I want checked out before I sell it, and I dont want the knee jerk rejection that so many shops seem to do. It was from a 14-19-3 but in checking the Hartzell site it appears that with shorter blades it is a substitute for the 14-19-2 Hartzell. If it passes, maybe it can save someone from paying $20,000 for a new prop.____Grant.

Oops again today! I just read Brians comments over again and realize that it said Payallup. I will call them on Monday.____Grant.
