I would like to upgrrade the avionics in my 1958 Cruisemaster. Goal over the next two years is to create an IFR aircraft. Any ideas are most welcome. Current airplane is in near original layout. I can supply panel photos if anyone wants to comment or advise. thanks North :)

hey north!

i don't have a -2, but check out the "before & after" pics of my 14-19 at russ williams' site (many thanks, russ!):

bob seals did the "before" panel in 1992-3. was going for a more 'vintage' look and something he could do his rating in.

i did the "after" panel in 2001 with a mind to "de-clutter", lose weight and simplify. N552A lost 18 lbs and it made light IFR a lot easier to live with IMHO. also gained some electrical load capability (modern avionics draw a lot less current than the old gear).

equipment:
garmin 430 w/ GI-106 vor/gs indicator
icom IC-200A tso 760 channel com
ps engineering pm6000 audio panel
microair t2000 tso transponder (rhs-can't see it in the picture)
heated pitot (25amps)
full gyros (not a "6-pack" arrangement, but it's workable)

the panel of the "190" is shaped somewhat differently than the -2, but maybe this will give you some ideas to get the juices flowing!

let us know what you end up with!

North,

My Cruisemaster is set up for light IFR. The guy I bought it from did so regularly. He had dual VORs, ILS, ADF, and Loran. He had already bought the inverted control wheels that got them out of the way of the panel view.

I wasn't comfortable with the panel layout so I had mine moved around a little. I have the airspeed upper left, then the AH, and the DG in the top row, with the turn co-ordinator and the VSI below. Not quite a standard T, but quite workable.

I removed the ADF and Loran and installed a used KLN 89B for an approach approved GPS. The 430 is much better but I just couldn't justify the cost in an airplane with the market value of a Bellanca.

I wouldn't have bothered with the GPS either, but that is the only approach available at my home airport. If you would like to see
some pictures, send me an email at cttully@austin.rr.com.

Slick Vic!

The -2 panels are fiberglass (straight 14-19s are metal) and, I presume, may be be easier to transform into modern layouts and such.
