Continental 0-470

This question is directed at you Cruisair and Cruisemaster experts from a Bellanca owner wannabee. I'm working on a 182 (on days I'm not working on my 108-1) the 182 has been parked outside for 21 years. The engine was not run ever during this time. It was majored in 1971 and has 500 hrs on that major. I am close to finishing all airframe related work and am ready to check out the engine. The prop turns freely and cold diff comp check shows good comp. I want to pre-oil everything before starting. it is very difficult to pressure oil the system as can't reach the oil pressure attachment fitting to attach a pump. Am thinking of spraying each cylinder with Philips XC 20/50 engine oil containing MMO. I want the diluted oil to get to places the straight oil is too viscous to seep into. I flew this plane last and engine was strong and comps in high 70's. I hold you Continental 0-470 experts and Franklin engine experts in high esteem and welcome your inputs.

thanks

Mark

Marvel Oil wont hurt, but it wont help either. I'd forget that.
if you have compression you're halfway home.. pull the top plugs and squirt some oil in, spin the prop around a few times.. put them back in and try to fire it up.. I'd have to wonder about the carb, might has some sediment or corrosion..
after it's run a bit, pull the plugs and borescope the cyls.. see if there's anything horrible in there...
and change the oil! try to get some crud out.. open the filter...
sitting that long, chances are there's be something that will need attention.. good luck!

There is probably a carb float A.D.(check the AD list) that needs doing, so it would be a good time to pull and clean the carb . Ave gas is better than car gas, but 20 years is long enough to turn any gas into varnish. When you pull the plugs to squirt oil in, have a fresh battery and turn the engine over long enough to build up oil pressure (with fresh oil) so that oil gets to all of the bearings that have dripped dry over the years. That way your first firing wont be on bone dry bearings.____Just some thoughts____Grant.

Pull the top plugs and engage the starter at intervals. This will oil the engine and if you do it long enough you may get oil pressure. At any rate the bearings will be sufficiently oiled before you start that bad boy. Lynn the crate
