Airspeed Indicator markings

I took my Cruisair 14-13 in to have a new transponder put in and as often happens opened a can of worms. The avionics guy says the Airspeed indicator needs to be replaced because the markings are wrong. It doesn't even go to 216 the Vne speed!

Does anybody have the clean stall speed and the others. The owners manual has the Vne, the maximum flap extention speed adn the stall speed with flaps. Thanks.

hey bill!

all required airspeed markings for any certificated aircraft are listed in that aircraft's type certificate data sheet. here's a link to the TCDS for the bellanca 14-13 series:

http://www.airweb.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgMakeModel.nsf/0/24d6631e7e1c971e8525672f006979b0/$FILE/A-773.pdf

if your avionics shop/mechanic have any qualms, just show them the TCDS. it is the final regulatory word for any certified aircraft.

hope this helps!

Hey Vic, I am not sure I agree with you. Cruisairs (and Cruismasters) were certified under CAR-4a and CAR 3, not FAR 21 and 23. The Aircraft Specifications are abreviated documents, so to speak. The TCDS issued under FARs are usually more complete than the Aircraft Specification issued for our planes.

Our planes still must comply with the regulations under which they were certified.

We can (and should) refer to the AC Spec or TCDS when appropriate, but when they do not contain sufficient information, we are stuck with referring to the regs. CAR 3 does detail markings on ASIs'. See CAR 3-757. If you are a real masochist I will send it to you. We do need to mark V(ne), V(so) and or V(s1) if you can tell the difference (?!) and V(fe), and also have the appropriate red radial mark, yellow, green and white bands.

Looking at the AC Handbook, I see that V(ne) is 216, V(fe) is 86, and I would guess that V(no) is 160, V(so) and or V(s1) [if we could really tell the difference] is 48. All in mph.

I still don't know what V(a) is, but that is from another post...and I guess another story.

with too much time on my hands for the moment...Larry

hey larry!

good point about CAR3/CAR4a, etc.

however, a quick look at the TCDS A-773 for the 14-13 series shows 3 speed limitations listed as:

level flight - 160mph
glide or dive - 216mph
flap extension - 85mph

no mention is made of "V" speeds, but these would correspond to Vno, Vne, and Vfe respectively. would there be any others required or necessary? i suppose Vx and Vy would be for part23 certification, but maybe they didn't publish those numbers back in the 40's.

if there was really a "show down" going on, perhaps a call to the factory (Alexandria Aircraft 320-763-4088) would be in order. and if anyone really wanted to kick a "sleeping dog", i suppose they could call the local FSDO and ask..........but on second thought, no.

great to hear from you, larry!
